Stump Grinding and Stump Removal in Florida: $4.50 per Inch, Lots by the Day

A stump in Florida sand is cheap to grind and expensive to ignore. Pine stumps rot in three years, live oak takes twenty, and cabbage palm boots never do. Our stump grinding service runs $4.50 per inch of diameter, $150 minimum per stump, and lots with 10 or more stumps go by the day. Most of our grinding follows a clearing job or a hurricane, within 75 miles of Ocala or Punta Gorda, FL. I spent ten years on corridors nobody could see from the road, and every one of them ended in stumps. Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form. Brandi texts you a scheduling window within the hour.

Grind vs remove

Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which One You Need

Grind when it stays in a yard, a fence line or a future lawn. Remove it with the root rake when a slab, driveway or septic field is going on top. Grinding takes the stump 6-12 inches below ground level in a healthy outdoor environment and leaves the root system to rot; the removal process with the dozer is a complete removal service that pulls the whole root ball and leaves a hole to fill. On a cleared lot with a pad coming, stump removal services by the day beat grinding one at a time. On a 40-year pine stand our stump grinding service grinds the yard stumps and rakes the pad stumps in the same visit. Tell us what goes on top and the choice is made.

Soils

Grinding Stumps in Sugar Sand, Flatwoods Hardpan and Caprock

Sugar sand grinds clean and fast; the teeth stay sharp for weeks. Flatwoods hardpan 18 to 30 inches down stops the wheel at the pan, which is fine, because the wood is gone well above it. The hole fills with water in June, so we backfill with grindings the same day. Caprock in Collier and Lee sits 20 to 40 inches under the sand and eats a set of carbide teeth in two stumps if the operator pushes. We grind to the rock and stop. On our jobs in Golden Gate Estates we budget a tooth change per lot. Tell us the county and we know the ground before we arrive.

Pine oak palm

Pine Stumps, Live Oak Stumps and Cabbage Palm Boots

Slash pine grinds like butter and is gone in ten minutes. Live oak is dense and wide; a 40-inch oak takes an hour and the roots run 30 feet. Cabbage palm has no taproot, just a fibrous boot that clogs the wheel, so we cut it low and grind it slow. Brazilian pepper, melaleuca and camphor resprout from any stump left untreated; we grind the stump below ground level and paint the roots the same hour, or you get a hedge by fall. Ad copy says stump grinding promotes healthy trees; what it does is take out a fungus host and a resprout source. Pine and oak do not resprout once ground. Count the pines and the oaks separately when you send the form; the price is the same per inch but the day is not.

After clearing

Stump Grinding After Land Clearing and Hurricane Tree Removal

Most of our grinding follows our own mulcher. The forestry head takes a tree down to 2 to 4 inches of wood; the grinding equipment finishes it the next day on lots where stumps cannot stay. After Ian we hauled 9 loads off one acre in Punta Gorda, $8,100, and came back for 14 pine stumps the storm had snapped at the base. Milton in 2024 did the same across Sarasota and Polk. Snapped pines leave a splintered base that grinds fine once the trunk is gone. FEMA covers debris on the public right-of-way; the stumps on your lot are yours. Send the tree count with the form and we price the stumps on the same sheet; we clear it and grind what is left in one visit.

Multiple

Multiple Stumps and Root Grinding on a Cleared Lot

Ten stumps or more is a day job, not a per-piece job: $2,600 with the skid steer, grinder and operator, transport included within 75 miles. A half-acre Deltona lot with 20-year pine usually has 15 to 25 stumps left from the first clearing; that is one day. Root grinding on surface roots from a removed oak runs by the hour on the same visit, and a thorough stump day leaves nothing above grade for the sod crew. Stump grinding will clear a lot for sod faster than any other tool we own. Case for scale: 20 acres of dead citrus in Lake Wales, trees pushed and roots raked with the big mulcher and dozer, 4 days, $21,000 plus haul, no grinding needed because nothing was left to grind. Count the stumps and send the lot size; one number comes back.

What is

What Is Stump Grinding and How Deep Does It Go

Stump grinding is a carbide wheel on a hydraulic arm chewing the wood into chips, pass by pass, until the top sits 6 to 12 inches down. We grind it into mulch, not out of the ground. Our stump grinders ride on the skid steer or a tracked unit that fits through a 36-inch gate, which is the equipment to remove tree stumps from a fenced yard safely and efficiently. Depth depends on what comes next: 6 inches for sod, 12 inches for flower beds or a fence post, deeper only if a footer is going there, and then the root rake is the right tool. Lateral roots stay and rot. In Florida heat and rain that takes two to five years for pine, longer for oak. Ask for the depth you need and the stump grinding service grinds to it.

Grindings

What Happens to the Grindings

Grindings are wood chips mixed with sand, about three times the volume of what stood there. Homeowner lawns, landscape beds and any outdoor space get the same choice. Default: we rake them back into the hole, mound them 4 inches, and they settle flat in a season. Second option: haul them away at $700 to 1,300 per load when the yard is finished and the chips have no place. Grindings are not topsoil; sod laid on them sinks, so a lawn hole gets fill dirt on top. Termites: subterranean termites feed on buried wood anywhere in Florida, so we keep grindings 10 feet off a slab and never pile them against a wall. Say rake or haul on the form and the service price follows.

Service area

Where We Grind Stumps in Florida

Within 75 miles of Ocala or Punta Gorda, or anywhere our mulcher is already working. Ocala covers Orlando, The Villages, Gainesville, Lakeland and Daytona; Punta Gorda covers Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sarasota, Naples and Port St. Lucie. Surrounding areas carry transport. Stump grinding near Ocala or Punta Gorda is usually scheduled within the week. We are a clearing outfit, not a tree service, and no tree trimming. Tree service pages say their stump grinding's certified arborists can assist with all your tree service needs, that a team of pruners and arborists can creatively manage your hedges, that stump grinding offers planting services for trees, that residents often have tree emergencies, and every one is premiere stump grinding contractors, top rated stump grinding contractors or certified stump grinding experts. We do none of that, and we do not post clients’ reviews. The best stump grinding experts I know are the two operators on our crew who have ground caprock. We offer a wide range of stump grinding services for residential and commercial properties, tree stump removal for property owners who want to reclaim a yard, and every lot we clear. Finish your landscape with professional stump grinding services, not a stump in the sod. Locally owned and operated since 2012. Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form with a stump count. Brandi texts you a scheduling window within the hour.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Stump Grinding

How much does it cost to grind a stump?

$4.50 per inch of diameter with a $150 minimum, so most pine stumps are the minimum and a 40-inch oak is $180. Ten or more stumps go by the day at $2,600. Measure across the widest point at ground level and send the number with the form.

Can I grind a stump myself?

You can rent a small grinder for about $300 a day and it will handle a 12-inch pine in sugar sand. It will not handle live oak, cabbage palm boots or caprock, and a rented wheel on hardpan is a long afternoon. Three stumps or more, the rental math loses.

Will the roots keep growing after grinding?

Pine and oak roots die once the stump is ground; they rot in two to five years and the lawn settles a little. Pepper, melaleuca and camphor roots send up shoots unless the stump gets herbicide the same hour, which we do on every exotic we grind.

How soon can you schedule stump grinding?

Usually within the week inside the 75-mile circles, same day when our mulcher is already on your lot. Unsightly tree stumps in a yard, a hazard near a drive, or you want to eliminate tripping hazards before the sod goes down: we take care of it quickly. Send a count and a photo or call (352) 619-3597. Brandi texts a window within an hour, and a free estimate follows.
