Land Clearing and Forestry Mulching in Central Florida: Sandhill, Flatwoods and Dead Grove Clearing from Ocala to Palm Bay

Central Florida gives me three grounds in one morning's drive. Sugar sand sandhill on the ridges, palmetto flatwoods between them, and dead citrus gone wild in Polk and Lake. The main yard is in Ocala, so Marion, Lake, Sumter, Citrus and Hernando sit inside the 75-mile circle with transport included. Flatwoods mulching runs $1,500 to 2,500 an acre, scrub $1,200 to 1,800. Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form. Brandi texts you a scheduling window within the hour.

Forestry mulching

Mulching Sandhill, Palmetto Flatwoods and Old Pasture in Central Florida

Sandhill and scrub on the Lake Wales Ridge and the Mount Dora Ridge is the cheapest ground in the state to mulch. Longleaf pine and turkey oak on deep sugar sand, or sand pine scrub you cannot see ten feet into. The forestry mulcher cuts fast there and the sand drains the same afternoon. Every lot of it is gopher tortoise country, and the Ridge adds the sand skink.

Mesic flatwoods with saw palmetto fill the ground between the ridges, Sumter to Brevard. A palmetto mat under 40-year slash pine is the standard $2,600 day on a platted lot. Bahiagrass pasture gone to wax myrtle and Brazilian pepper is the third kind of overgrowth, and the pepper gets treated at the cut or it returns. Twenty years of underbrush is fire fuel, and forestry mulchers turn that undergrowth into a layer that burns slow. I spent ten years on corridors nobody could see from the road, most of them through this ground.

Services

Land Clearing Services We Offer Around Ocala and Orlando

We offer forestry mulching as the lead service and five others behind it.

  • Forestry mulching and land clearing: brush and trees ground in place, mature trees you flag stay standing.
  • Lot clearing for new homes on platted lots around St. Cloud, Palm Bay and Spring Hill.
  • Brush clearing and brush removal on fence lines and any overgrown lot.
  • Stump grinding, $4.50 per inch of diameter, $150 minimum per stump.
  • Site preparation services and site prep services for the pad: land grading, fill and excavation work with an excavator, $170 an hour.
  • Debris removal services after a storm, by the 10-yard load.

No concrete, wells, septic or house demolition. I know people who do those. Insured crews, residential and commercial, on every job site.

Lot clearing

Lot Clearing for New Construction from Ocala to Palm Bay

A half-acre platted lot is one day, $2,600. A quarter-acre infill lot is $1,800 flat. Polk pulled 6,725 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, Marion 5,420, Osceola 5,085, Orange 4,221, Lake 3,999, Brevard 3,376, Sumter 3,105 as a Census estimate, Citrus 2,082 and Hernando 1,734.

Ridge lots drain. A flatwoods lot in Osceola or Brevard holds water in June and needs fill after the trees come down. We mulch, flag the low corner, and the dozer spreads fill where the slab goes. The mulch layer is the erosion control on a ridge lot, because bare sugar sand moves the first time it rains. Send the parcel ID and the site plan and you get your Florida property cleared on a written price.

Local ground

Three Grounds, Three Prices: Clearing Land on Ridge, Flatwoods and Dead Grove

Three grounds, three prices. Sugar-sand sandhill and scrub on the ridges runs $1,200 to 1,800 an acre and carries gopher tortoise and sand skink surveys first. Palmetto flatwoods runs $1,500 to 2,500 an acre by density, and the tree size of the small trees sets the day count on a platted lot. Dead citrus groves are the third, and they are not a mulching job. The trees get pushed, the roots raked, and the stumps hauled or burned under a Forest Service authorization.

Last winter we cleared 20 acres of dead grove in Lake Wales with the 300-hp machine and a dozer in four days. Four days, $21,000 plus haul, and the ground was ready for pasture by spring. The Ocala yard sits in the middle of all three grounds. Clearing land here is a question of which ground you own.

Pricing

How Much Does Land Clearing Cost in Central Florida?

Three per acre prices cover almost every job here, and the day rate covers the platted lots.

  • Sandhill and scrub on the ridges: $1,200 to 1,800 per acre.
  • Palmetto and pine flatwoods: $1,500 to 2,500 per acre by density.
  • Full clearing to dirt with stumps out, dead groves included: $3,000 to 5,500 per acre.
  • Brazilian pepper regrowth on old pasture: add $500 per acre.
  • Skid steer mulcher: $2,600 a day, transport included within 75 miles of Ocala. 300-hp machine $4,000 a day plus transport.
  • Dozer and root rake: $170 an hour. Haul-off $700 to 1,300 per load.

Polk, Brevard and Highlands sit past the 75-mile circle and carry transport. June through September adds one day on Kissimmee muck or wet flatwoods. The tortoise survey, $400 to 900, comes before the price. A 1.25-acre scrub lot in Palm Coast took one day at $2,600, and a Clermont ridge lot prices the same. If you need land clearing on 10 acres and up, the big machine earns its rate. Call (352) 619-3597 with your acreage and the county. The free estimate is in person inside the circle.

Permits and rules

Wetland, Permit and Tortoise Rules Before You Clear Your Land

Three water management districts split this region. SJRWMD covers Orange, east Lake, Brevard and east Marion. SWFWMD covers Polk, Hernando, Citrus, Sumter and the west side. SFWMD takes south Osceola and Highlands. All three issue the Environmental Resource Permit for wetland fill or drainage changes, and mulching a dry lot triggers none of them. The USACE Jacksonville District handles federal wetlands. A wetland line on your plat means a delineation first.

County codes come next. Orange County requires a tree removal permit at 4 inches DBH on undeveloped land. Polk wants a land clearing permit before the site plan. Lake requires a tree removal permit outside agricultural use. Marion runs tree protection and springs zones under its Land Development Code. Greenbelt classification under FS 193.461 exempts bona fide grove and timber land. FWC gopher tortoise rules apply on almost every Lake, Polk and Highlands lot: no land clearing work within 25 feet of a burrow without a permit. Scrub-jay zones in Palm Bay and Mims need FWS consultation. A property owner holds those permits, so I check them before I quote.

Storm debris

Storm Damage and Debris Removal After Ian and Milton

Ian in 2022 and Milton in 2024 put oak and pine down across Polk, Osceola and Brevard, and Milton tracked right over the Lake Wales Ridge. Storm damage goes by the load, $700 to 1,300 per 10-yard load. FEMA covers the public right-of-way, your lot is yours. A leaning pine is a chainsaw and a stump grind. Blown-down oak is a load count, and I can count loads from one picture.

Owner, Pellegrino Land Works · Ocala and Punta Gorda

Marc Pellegrino, 44, owns Pellegrino Land Works and runs it from Ocala in Marion County, with a second crew in Punta Gorda. He spent 10 years as a right-of-way clearing crew lead for a utility contractor on FPL and co-op corridors across Florida, flatwoods to cypress strands to muck, and started his own outfit in 2012. After Hurricane Ian in 2022 he spent six months on debris in Charlotte and Lee counties. He knows the FWC gopher tortoise rule, the eagle nest buffer and the water management district permit thresholds by heart. Brandi runs the office and texts every scheduling window.

FAQ

Central Florida Land Clearing Questions

How much does land clearing in Florida's central ridge country cost per acre?

Scrub and sandhill run $1,200 to 1,800 an acre, flatwoods $1,500 to 2,500, and clearing to dirt with stumps out $3,000 to 5,500. Platted lots go by the day at $2,600.

When is the best season to clear a lot here?

November to May on flatwoods and muck. Ridge lots on sugar sand clear in any month, including August, because the sand drains the same day.

Do I need a permit to clear my own land in Marion, Lake or Polk?

Usually, yes, unless the parcel carries greenbelt classification. Marion protects trees under its Land Development Code, Lake wants a permit outside agricultural use, and Polk wants one before the site plan. The gopher tortoise survey comes first on every upland lot.

Can I burn the piles on my lot?

On grove and timber land outside town, often yes, with a Forest Service burn authorization from the Lakeland, Orlando or Withlacoochee district that day. Urban Orange and the platted lots are no-burn, so mulch is the answer there.

How fast can a land clearing company reach Clermont or Haines City?

Brandi texts a scheduling window within an hour of your form, and inside the circle the crew is usually on your lot within a week in the dry season. Call (352) 619-3597 with the parcel ID. The company is locally owned and operated out of Ocala, a full-service land clearing contractor for commercial and residential lots, and land management on acreage comes with a free estimate.
