Forestry mulching

Forestry Mulching in Alachua County: Sandhill, Hammock and Flatwoods

Forestry mulching handles most land clearing in Alachua County because the Tree Protection rules keep the big oaks and city lots get no burn pile. The mulcher grinds turkey oak, scrub, gallberry, wax myrtle and young pine into a mulch mat about three inches deep and leaves the roots in the sand. In hammock we run the head high and clear only the understory, so the live oaks and magnolias stay. Live oaks in Alachua are older than the county and treated that way. Our mulching services reclaim overgrown land to 8-inch stems.

Services

Land Clearing Services Available in Alachua County

Professional land clearing services across Alachua County, an infill lot or 40 acres of pasture gone to woods near Archer, residential and commercial.

  • Forestry mulching of pine and hardwood regrowth under the oaks, roots kept.
  • Lot clearing and site prep for slab, driveway and drain field on sand or clay.
  • Brush clearing and underbrushing under oaks you keep.
  • Selective clearing: laurel oak and sweetgum out, live oak and longleaf kept.
  • Grubbing and root rake with the dozer, $170 an hour.
  • Tree removal of dead pine, stumps ground at $4.50 an inch, $150 minimum.
  • Not our work services: pond excavation, septic, wells, concrete. I know people who do, and I will say who.

A land clearing service removes what grew back and leaves the ground level. We remove unwanted vegetation and hand off to the site contractor.

Lot clearing

Lot Clearing and Acreage for New Homes in Gainesville and High Springs

Alachua County's builders pulled 689 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, down 16 percent, with the growth west of I-75 and north to High Springs. These are small residential lots on sandhill or 5 acre homesites. Residential land clearing on a half acre is a day, $2,600, transport included; a quarter-acre infill is $1,800 flat. On a parcel off SR 26 last fall the pasture had gone to laurel oak and wax myrtle in six years. Low ground near Newnans Lake takes fill after site preparation, and grading sends water to the ditch. Property development on larger parcels prices by the acre. Homeowner or builder, send the parcel number.

Ground and soil

Terrain, Soil and Vegetation Across the County

Alachua sits on the edge of the Cody Scarp, and the ground changes at I-75. West of it is longleaf and turkey oak sandhill on deep sugar sand running to the Santa Fe River, karst all the way. The middle is live oak and magnolia hammock over clay, the kind that ruts in February. East toward Newnans Lake and Hawthorne it drops to flatwoods soil, a spodosol hardpan that stands in water by July, and Paynes Prairie floods when the sink clogs. Old pasture woodland is laurel oak that will overgrow in five years. Kudzu takes the fence line near town. Site conditions get checked on foot.

Permits and rules

Tree Protection, Two Water Districts and Gopher Tortoises in Alachua County

Alachua County's Tree Protection rules in the Land Development Code protect heritage trees, and Gainesville adds its own tree permits, so a big live oak stays unless the permit says otherwise; the smaller city codes run lighter. Agricultural land in bona fide agriculture under greenbelt classification is exempt. Two districts hold the Environmental Resource Permit here: SRWMD west of the divide and SJRWMD east of it, and in both clearing is not the trigger, fill and drainage are. Gopher tortoise on sandhill: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow, FWC relocation permit before removing vegetation. A bald eagle nest on Orange Lake moves us 660 feet off.

Storm debris

Storm Debris Cleanup in Alachua County

Idalia in 2023 and Helene in 2024 clipped the west side of Alachua on their way through the Big Bend and left laurel oak and pine down around High Springs. FEMA cleared the public right-of-way; your lot was yours. Trees and branches go by the load, $700 to 1,300 per 10-yard load.

FAQ

Land Clearing Questions from Alachua Property Owners

How much does land clearing cost per acre in Alachua County?

$1,200 to 1,800 an acre for sandhill mulched in place, $1,500 to 2,500 for flatwoods or thick hammock understory, $3,000 to 5,500 to bare dirt with stumps. Expert land clearing on big acreage is big-mulcher work at $4,000 a day.

Do I need a permit to burn cleared brush in Gainesville?

Yes, a Florida Forest Service burn authorization, and city lots in Gainesville do not get one. On acreage toward High Springs a pile can sometimes burn under that authorization. Otherwise the trees and brush stay as mulch.

Can you clear heavily wooded hammock without losing the oaks?

Yes. We mulch the understory and leave every live oak over the protected size; tree clearing of laurel oak and sweetgum is the normal job. Commercial land clearing, site clearing for commercial development, master-planned communities: those land clearing projects price by the day. Our crews have the equipment to handle a hammock.

Who do I call to clear land near Gainesville?

Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form; Brandi texts you a scheduling window within the hour. Our crews bring the experience and equipment to clear brush and clear land safely and efficiently on sand and hammock clay. Equipment and expertise are the easy part; knowing where the water goes is the land clearing service you pay for. Residential jobs go first in dry season.

What do land clearing services in Alachua usually include?

Mulching the undergrowth and small pine, flagging burrows, and leaving a mat that holds the sand against erosion. Clearing land to a pad adds stump removal and grading. Clearing brush along a drainage ditch is a half day. Two days transform an old pasture into a homesite.
