Forestry Mulching and Land Clearing in Leon County, FL: Tallahassee, Woodville, Bradfordville

Leon County is Red Hills hardwood north of I-10, pine flatwoods and sand south of town, and the strictest tree rules in North Florida on top of both. Tallahassee is about 160 miles from our Ocala yard, so transport is a quoted line and the 300-hp mulcher is $4,000 a day plus it. I ran right-of-way through this clay for a decade, one corridor at a time. Send the form or call (352) 619-3597. Brandi texts you a scheduling window within the hour.

Forestry mulching

Forestry Mulching in Leon County: Red Hills Hardwood and Flatwoods Pine

Forestry mulching is how land clearing in Leon County gets past the Environmental Management Permit, because mulching the understory and keeping the protected trees is what the permit wants to see. The mulcher grinds sweetgum, yaupon, privet, wax myrtle and young pine into a mulch mat about three inches deep and leaves the roots to hold the clay. On a slope that matters; bare Red Hills clay moves to the ditch in one storm. Red Hills clay remembers every machine that ever crossed it. Our mulching services reclaim overgrown land to 12-inch stems.

Services

Land Clearing Services Available in Leon County

Professional land clearing services across Leon County, a Bradfordville lot or 40 acres near Chaires, residential and commercial.

  • Forestry mulching of pine and hardwood regrowth on clay, roots kept.
  • Lot clearing and site prep for the slab, drive and drain field under an EMP.
  • Brush clearing and underbrushing under the oaks you keep.
  • Selective clearing: sweetgum and privet out, live oak, beech and magnolia kept.
  • Grubbing and root rake with the dozer, $170 an hour.
  • Tree removal of dead pine, stumps ground at $4.50 an inch, $150 minimum.
  • Not our work services: pond excavation, septic, wells, concrete, house demolition. I know people who do.

What a land clearing service removes is the understory, not the dirt under it. We remove unwanted vegetation and the pad crew takes over.

Lot clearing

Lot Clearing and Acreage for New Homes in Tallahassee and Bradfordville

Leon County's builders pulled 617 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, down 20 percent, most of them north of town toward Bradfordville and east toward Chaires. These are small residential lots under hardwood or 5 acre homesites in old pine. Residential land clearing on a half acre is a day, $2,600 plus transport; a quarter-acre infill is $1,800 flat. On a lot in Woodville last winter the back third was a slough, wet since September. Low ground takes fill after site preparation, and grading sends the water to the ditch. Property development on larger parcels prices by the acre. Send the parcel number, homeowner or builder alike.

Priced first: a gopher tortoise survey at $400 to 900 on sandy ground, and one extra day on wet flatwoods or rutting clay from June through September.

Ground and soil

Terrain, Soil and Vegetation Across the County

Leon splits at the Cody Scarp, roughly along I-10. North of it the Red Hills roll in loamy clay under live oak, beech, hickory and magnolia, and that clay ruts a dozer to the belly after a winter rain. South of town the ground drops to deep sand and flatwoods soil, a spodosol hardpan under slash pine and gallberry that stands in water by July. The Ochlockonee River bottom and the sloughs near Lake Jackson are cypress-gum and titi, wet all year. The woodland south of town is cutover that will overgrow in three summers. Privet takes the fence line near town. On foot is the only way I trust site conditions.

Permits and rules

Environmental Management Permits, Tree Rules and Species in Leon County

The county requires an Environmental Management Permit before clearing anything outside bona fide agriculture, and Tallahassee adds its Tree Ordinance and protected roads, so heritage live oaks stay. Agricultural land under greenbelt classification is exempt. NWFWMD holds the Environmental Resource Permit; clearing is not the trigger, fill and drainage changes are. Gopher tortoise on the sand south of town: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow, FWC relocation permit before removing vegetation. Red-cockaded woodpecker lives at the Apalachicola National Forest edge, and a bald eagle nest on Lake Talquin moves us 660 feet off.

Storm debris

Storm Debris Cleanup in the Big Bend

Michael in 2018 brushed Leon from the west, Idalia in 2023 and Helene in 2024 came up through the Big Bend, and each one dropped hardwood and pine across lots from Miccosukee to the forest edge. FEMA's crews cleared the road edge only, and your lot stayed on your ticket. Trees and branches go by the load, $700 to 1,300 per 10-yard load.

After Hurricane Ian in 2022 he spent six months on debris in Charlotte and Lee counties. FAQ

Land Clearing Questions from Leon Property Owners

How much does land clearing cost per acre in Leon County?

$1,500 to 2,500 an acre for pine or hardwood understory mulched in place, $1,200 to 1,800 on open sandhill, $3,000 to 5,500 to bare dirt with stumps. Expert land clearing on cutover acreage is big-mulcher work at $4,000 a day plus transport.

Do I need a permit to burn cleared brush in Tallahassee?

Yes, a Florida Forest Service burn authorization, and city lots in Tallahassee do not get one. On acreage toward Chaires a pile can often burn under that authorization. Otherwise the trees and brush stay as mulch.

Can you clear heavily wooded hardwood lots without losing the big trees?

Yes. We mulch the understory and leave every protected tree; tree clearing of sweetgum and laurel oak is the normal job under an EMP. Day rates cover commercial land clearing; site clearing for commercial development and master-planned communities are land clearing projects measured in machine days. Our crews have the equipment to handle clay.

Who do I call to clear land near Tallahassee?

Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form; Brandi texts you a scheduling window within the hour. Our crews bring the experience and equipment to clear brush and clear land safely and efficiently on clay and sand. Equipment and expertise are the easy part; knowing where the water goes is the land clearing service you pay for. Dry season belongs to residential jobs first.

What do land clearing services in Leon usually include?

Mulching the undergrowth and small pine, flagging burrows, and leaving a mat that holds the clay against erosion. Clearing land to a pad adds stump removal and grading. Figure a half day for clearing brush along a drainage ditch. Two days transform an overgrown lot into a homesite.
