Forestry Mulching and Land Clearing in Highlands County, FL: Sebring, Avon Park, Lake Placid
Highlands is the south end of the Lake Wales Ridge: sugar sand, scrub and dead citrus down US 27, wet prairie and muck off both sides. Lots clear fast on the ridge and slow in the flats. Our Punta Gorda crew comes up US 17 and SR 70, past the 75-mile circle, so transport goes on the quote. Skid steer mulcher, $2,600 a day. Send the form or call (352) 619-3597. Forestry Mulching in Highlands County: Ridge Scrub and Old Grove Cut in Place
Forestry mulching on ridge scrub is the fastest acre we cut anywhere in Florida. Sand pine, scrub oak and palmetto go through the head into a mulch layer two to three inches deep, and the roots hold the sugar sand against erosion in a June storm. Scrub oak comes back from the root collar, so the head drops an inch below grade on each clump. Dead citrus is the other job here, and it is not a mulch job: trees pushed, roots raked, pepper stumps treated within minutes of the cut. Our mulching services reclaim overgrown land at stems to about 8 inches, scrub oak included. The Lake Wales Ridge was a beach when the rest of Florida was ocean, and it still drains like one.
Land Clearing Services Available in Highlands County
Professional land clearing services in Highlands County cover a town lot, a 10-acre homesite or 80 acres of agricultural land off SR 70, residential and commercial.
- Forestry mulching of pine and hardwood undergrowth.
- Lot clearing and site prep for the pad, drive and drain field.
- Brush clearing and fence line underbrushing on old pasture.
- Selective clearing: pepper and dead pine out, the live oak hammock kept.
- Grove removal, grading and dirt work with the dozer, $170 an hour.
- Tree clearing, tree removal and stump grinding, $4.50 per inch, $150 minimum.
A land clearing service removes the regrowth and leaves the grade. We remove unwanted vegetation and keep the woodland you point at. Not our work services: pond excavation, wells, septic, concrete. I know people who do.
Lot and Acreage Clearing for New Homes in Sebring, Avon Park and Lake Placid
Highlands County's builders pulled 706 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, down 16 percent. Small county, big lots. Residential land clearing here is less small residential lots and more old grove parcels going to homesites: 2.5 to 10 acres, a pad, a drive, pasture behind. A half-acre lot in Sebring is still one day, $2,600; a quarter-acre infill lot is $1,800 flat. Low ground near Lake Istokpoga takes fill after site preparation; SFWMD permits the fill, not the clearing. A homeowner, property development in master-planned communities off US 27, commercial development on commercial land along the highway: same insured crews. Four days will transform a dead grove into a pad and pasture. Residential jobs on the ridge are dry the day we leave.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost in Highlands County?
$2,600 a day on the skid steer mulcher and $4,000 a day on the 300-hp machine, plus transport from Punta Gorda, since Sebring sits outside our 75-mile circle. Priced first: the gopher tortoise survey, $400 to 900, and one extra day on muck or wet prairie June through September.
- Lake Wales Ridge scrub and sandhill: $1,200 to 1,800 an acre.
- Palmetto and pine flatwoods off the ridge: $1,500 to 2,500 an acre by density.
- Brazilian pepper in dead groves: add $500 an acre.
- Full clearing to dirt with stumps: $3,000 to 5,500 an acre.
- Bush hogging on pasture: $65 to 95 an acre, $450 minimum.
- Haul-off: $700 to 1,300 a load, 10-yard loads.
The grove job that sets the scale sits just up the ridge: 20 acres of dead citrus in Lake Wales, pushed and root raked, big mulcher plus dozer, four days, $21,000 plus haul. Expert land clearing is a number in writing. Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form for a free quote.
Terrain, Soil and Vegetation Across Highlands County
The Lake Wales Ridge down US 27 is the deepest, oldest sugar sand in the state: sand pine scrub and scrub oak, with the Archbold scrub south of Lake Placid as the textbook version. Off the ridge the ground drops fast to flatwoods soil, a spodosol with a hardpan under slash pine and palmetto, then to wet prairie and muck toward Lake Istokpoga and the Kissimmee River. Near Lake Istokpoga a dozer in August sinks to the belly pan; the mulcher floats. Site conditions pick the machine and the day count. Grove ground will overgrow with pepper in three years, and I have walked plenty of it.
Development Orders, Wetlands and Protected Species Before You Clear in Highlands
The county ties clearing to a development order under its land development regulations, and land in bona fide agriculture under greenbelt classification is exempt, which covers most grove and pasture acreage. The ridge is the species problem. Sand skink and Florida scrub-jay both live on the Lake Wales Ridge, and a scrub lot brings FWS consultation before a machine unloads. FWC gopher tortoise rules apply on every upland lot: no work within 25 feet of a burrow, relocation permit if burrows turn up. Bald eagle nests carry a 660-foot buffer. SFWMD holds the Environmental Resource Permit. Clearing is not the trigger; wetland fill or a drainage change is. Piles need a Florida Forest Service burn authorization, and grove land outside town can often get one.
Storm Debris Cleanup After Ian and Milton
Ian crossed Highlands in 2022, and Milton in 2024 tracked straight up the Lake Wales Ridge, laying oak and pine from Lake Placid north. Trees and branches go by the load, $700 to 1,300 per 10-yard load, 8 to 10 loads on a wooded acre. FEMA covers public right-of-way only. After Ian I spent six months on debris in Charlotte and Lee, one county south of here. Dead pine left standing is the next storm's load count.

Land Clearing Questions from Highlands County Property Owners
How much does land clearing cost per acre in Highlands County?
Ridge scrub mulches at $1,200 to 1,800 an acre, flatwoods off the ridge at $1,500 to 2,500, clearing to dirt with stumps $3,000 to 5,500. A half-acre lot is one day, $2,600, plus transport from Punta Gorda. A dead grove is dozer hours plus haul.
Do I need a permit to clear land in Highlands?
For a homesite, yes: the county ties clearing to a development order under its land development regulations. Agricultural land under greenbelt classification is exempt. Scrub lots on the ridge also need sand skink and scrub-jay clearance through FWS before clearing brush.
Can I burn cleared brush on a town lot here?
Rarely. Every pile needs a daily Florida Forest Service burn authorization, and platted lots seldom get one. On grove land outside town a pile often can burn under it. Otherwise the trees and brush stay as mulch and nothing leaves the parcel.
How long does it take to clear a dead citrus grove?
About one day per five acres with the 300-hp mulcher and a dozer behind it. The Lake Wales grove, 20 acres, took four days: trees pushed, roots raked. Commercial land clearing and site clearing run by the day, $4,000 plus transport.
How do I get an estimate for land clearing in Highlands?
Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form. Brandi texts you a scheduling window within an hour. Highlands sits past our 75-mile circle from Punta Gorda, so the land clearing service estimate carries a transport line I quote before the day rate.
