Forestry mulching

Forestry Mulching in Lake County: Sandhill, Flatwoods and Old Grove Cut in Place

Forestry mulching on a Clermont lot takes turkey oak, sand pine and palmetto into a mulch layer about three inches deep and leaves the sugar sand covered. On those ridge slopes the mat is the erosion control; bare sand goes downhill in one afternoon storm. Toward Leesburg the ground is flatwoods, slash pine over palmetto on a hardpan, and the mulcher floats where a dozer ruts. The head grinds the palmetto crown with the frond, which a bush hog cannot. Dead citrus is a push-and-rake job, not a mulch job, and the pepper in it gets cut-stump treated within minutes. Our mulching services reclaim overgrown land at stems to about 8 inches. Here the water table is a neighbor who drops by every June and stays till September.

Services

Land Clearing Services Available in Lake County

Professional land clearing services in Lake cover a platted lot, a 10-acre homesite in Sorrento or agricultural land along SR 50, residential and commercial.

  • Forestry mulching of pine and hardwood undergrowth.
  • Lot clearing and site prep for the pad, drive and drain field.
  • Brush clearing and fence line underbrushing on old pasture.
  • Selective clearing: pepper and dead pine out, the live oaks kept.
  • Tree clearing and stump grinding, $4.50 per inch, $150 minimum.
  • Dirt work with the dozer: root rake, grading, pond excavation, $170 an hour.

The land clearing service removes the regrowth and keeps the woodland you want. We remove unwanted vegetation and stop at your flag line. Not our work services: concrete, wells, septic, demolition. I know people who do.

Lot clearing

Lot and Acreage Clearing for New Homes in Clermont, Groveland and Leesburg

Lake County's builders pulled 3,999 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, down 4 percent. Residential land clearing here splits two ways: small residential lots in the south county subdivisions, a half acre for one day at $2,600 or a quarter-acre infill lot at $1,800 flat, and 5 to 20 acre homesites in Sorrento and south of Lake Harris. Low flatwoods lots take fill after site preparation, and the district permits the fill, not the clearing. A homeowner, property development in master-planned communities along US 27, commercial development on commercial land along SR 50: same insured crews. One day will transform a ridge lot into a dry pad; the flatwoods residential jobs wait for November.

Pricing

How Much Does Land Clearing Cost in Lake County?

$2,600 a day on the skid steer mulcher, transport included, because all of Lake sits inside 75 miles of Ocala. The 300-hp mulcher is $4,000 a day plus transport. Priced first: the gopher tortoise survey, $400 to 900, and one extra day on wet flatwoods June through September.

  • Sandhill and scrub on the ridge: $1,200 to 1,800 an acre.
  • Palmetto and pine flatwoods: $1,500 to 2,500 an acre by density.
  • Brazilian pepper in old groves: add $500 an acre.
  • Full clearing to dirt with stumps: $3,000 to 5,500 an acre.
  • Bush hogging on pasture: $65 to 95 an acre, $450 minimum.
  • Haul-off: $700 to 1,300 per 10-yard load.

For grove land the scale job is down US 27: 20 acres of dead citrus in Lake Wales, pushed and root raked, four days, $21,000 plus haul. Expert land clearing is a written number. Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form for a free quote.

Ground and soil

Terrain, Soil and Vegetation Across Lake County

South Lake is the north end of the Lake Wales Ridge: deep sugar sand around Lake Minneola, longleaf and turkey oak over wiregrass, old groves gone to bahiagrass and pepper. North and east the ground drops to flatwoods soil, a spodosol with a hardpan under slash pine and palmetto, and to hammock and cypress along the Palatlakaha River and Lake Harris. The Green Swamp in the southwest corner is wet into December. Near Lake Harris a dozer in August sinks to the belly pan; the mulcher floats on its tracks. Site conditions pick the machine. Lots here overgrow in three years, pepper first on the grove ground.

Permits and rules

Tree Permits, Wetlands and Protected Species Before You Clear in Lake County

The Lake County tree removal permit applies outside agricultural use under the Land Development Regulations; on our jobs in Lake that permit sets the start date. Land in bona fide agriculture under greenbelt classification is exempt. Gopher tortoise is on almost every lot in this county. FWC rules: no work within 25 feet of a burrow, relocation permit before clearing if burrows are found. Sand skink lives on the ridge in south Lake and brings FWS consultation. Bald eagle nests carry a 660-foot buffer. The Environmental Resource Permit sits with SJRWMD in the east and SWFWMD in the west. Clearing is not the trigger; wetland fill or a drainage change is. Piles need a Florida Forest Service burn authorization, rarely granted in the subdivisions.

Storm debris

Storm Debris Cleanup After Ian and Milton

Ian in 2022 flooded the lake chain and Milton in 2024 tracked up the ridge, laying oak and pine across lots from the south county to Mount Dora. Trees and branches go by the load, $700 to 1,300 per 10-yard load, 8 to 10 loads on a wooded acre. FEMA covers the public right-of-way only. After Ian I spent six months on debris in Charlotte and Lee. Leaners left standing are the next storm's loads.

Marc Pellegrino, 44, owns Pellegrino Land Works and runs it from Ocala in Marion County, with a second crew in Punta Gorda. He spent 10 years as a right-of-way clearing crew lead for a utility contractor on FPL and co-op corridors across Florida, flatwoods to cypress strands to muck, and started his own outfit in 2012. After Hurricane Ian in 2022 he spent six months on debris in Charlotte and Lee counties. He knows the FWC gopher tortoise rule, the eagle nest buffer and the water management district permit thresholds by heart. Brandi runs the office and texts every scheduling window.

FAQ

Land Clearing Questions from Lake County Property Owners

How much does land clearing cost per acre in Lake County?

Sandhill mulches at $1,200 to 1,800 an acre, flatwoods toward Leesburg at $1,500 to 2,500, clearing to dirt with stumps $3,000 to 5,500. A half-acre lot is one day on the skid steer, $2,600, transport included.

Do I need a permit to clear a lot in Clermont?

For protected trees, yes: the county permit applies outside agricultural use, and the city has its own code inside its limits. Agricultural land under greenbelt classification is exempt. The gopher tortoise survey comes first on nearly every lot.

Can I burn cleared brush on a platted lot in Lake?

Rarely on a platted lot. Every pile needs a daily Florida Forest Service burn authorization, and the subdivisions do not qualify. Forestry mulching leaves the trees and brush as mulch on the sand, so nothing burns or rides to the landfill.

Can you clear heavily wooded acreage in Sorrento?

Yes. The 300-hp mulcher takes oak and pine to about 12 inches; above that the dozer with root rake takes the wood out. On the ROW we ran that pairing on every corridor here. Commercial land clearing and site clearing go by the day, $4,000 plus transport on the big machine.

How do I get an estimate for land clearing in Lake?

Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form, and Brandi texts you a scheduling window within an hour. Every parcel in Lake sits inside our 75-mile circle, so the land clearing service estimate has no transport line, just the day rate and the stump count.
