Forestry Mulching and Land Clearing in DeSoto County, FL: Arcadia, Nocatee, Fort Ogden

DeSoto is pasture, dead groves and Peace River bottomland, and the permits doubled last year because people finally noticed Arcadia is 35 minutes from the coast. Flatwoods soil that floods in July, sugar sand on the ridges along US 17. Our Punta Gorda yard is inside 75 miles of every parcel in the county: skid steer mulcher, $2,600 a day, transport included. I ran right-of-way crews up this river for ten years. Send the form or call (352) 619-3597. Brandi texts you a scheduling window within the hour.

Forestry mulching

Forestry Mulching in DeSoto County: Pasture Going Back to Palmetto

Forestry mulching is the land clearing in DeSoto County that fits the ground: pasture that quit being mowed and went back to palmetto, wax myrtle and pepper. The skid steer grinds it into a three-inch mulch mat, roots in place, so the first August storm does not carry the sand into the ditch as erosion. Palmetto crowns survive a bush hog; the mulcher takes the crown with the frond. Pepper along the fence line is cut-stump treated within minutes. Dead grove rows get pushed and raked instead, because citrus roots do not mulch. The tracks float on wet flatwoods where a wheel loader digs in. Our mulching services reclaim overgrown land at stems to 8 inches. Muck does not care what your trailer weighs. It eats it anyway.

Services

Land Clearing Services Available in DeSoto County

Professional land clearing services in DeSoto County, from an Arcadia town lot to 80 acres of agricultural land on SR 70, residential and commercial.

  • Forestry mulching of pine and hardwood undergrowth, mulch left on the ground.
  • Lot clearing and site prep for pad, driveway and drain field.
  • Brush clearing and underbrushing along pasture edges and creek lines.
  • Selective clearing: pepper and dead pine out, live oak hammock kept.
  • Grove removal with the dozer and root rake, $170 an hour.
  • Tree removal and stump grinding, $4.50 per inch, $150 minimum.
  • Not our work services: pond excavation, septic, wells, concrete. I know people who do.

A land clearing service removes the regrowth and keeps the pasture grade. We remove unwanted vegetation and leave the oaks.

Lot clearing

Lot Clearing and Acreage for New Homes in Arcadia, Nocatee and Fort Ogden

DeSoto County's builders pulled 159 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, up 124 percent, the biggest percentage jump in Florida. The county permits county-wide, so that number covers Arcadia, Nocatee and Fort Ogden together. Residential land clearing here is mostly 2.5 to 10 acre homesites, not small residential lots: a pad, a drive, pasture behind the house. A half-acre pad is one day, $2,600; a quarter-acre infill lot in Arcadia is $1,800 flat. Property development on old grove land runs by the acre plus dozer hours. Low ground near Horse Creek takes fill after site preparation, with grading toward the creek. Two days transform a palmetto homesite into a pad. Send the parcel number, homeowner or builder alike.

Ground and soil

Terrain, Soil and Vegetation Across DeSoto County

DeSoto is Peace River country: sugar sand and scrub oak on the US 17 ridge, hydric flatwoods east and west of it, and bottomland hammock along the river, Horse Creek and Joshua Creek. Flatwoods soil is Myakka spodosol with a hardpan that holds water June to October. Near Lake Suzy on the Charlotte line the ground is platted flatwoods on the GDC pattern. The woodland between pastures is slash pine over palmetto with cabbage palm, and a dead grove will overgrow with pepper and wax myrtle in three years. SR 31 and SR 70 cross wet prairie that floods in a normal August. I read site conditions on foot before I quote the days.

Permits and rules

County Clearing Permits and Protected Species in DeSoto County

DeSoto permits county-wide under its land development regulations, and land in bona fide agriculture under greenbelt classification is exempt. Removing vegetation for a homesite on that land still ties to the building permit. Gopher tortoise: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow, FWC relocation permit if any turn up, and the ridge lots are full of them. Crested caracara nests on the prairie pasture bring FWS consultation. Bald eagle: 660-foot nest buffer. SWFWMD holds the Environmental Resource Permit, and clearing is not the trigger: fill and drainage changes are. On our jobs in DeSoto the tortoise agent sets the start date.

Storm debris

Storm Debris Cleanup After Ian

Ian crossed DeSoto as a hurricane in 2022 and the Peace River flooded Arcadia for a week. FEMA cleared public right-of-way; the parcel was the owner's. Trees and branches go by the load, $700 to 1,300 per 10-yard load, and a wooded homesite ran 5 to 9 loads. Dead pine still standing mulches for less. Count the brown crowns before June.

Marc Pellegrino, 44, owns Pellegrino Land Works and runs it from Ocala in Marion County, with a second crew in Punta Gorda. He spent 10 years as a right-of-way clearing crew lead for a utility contractor on FPL and co-op corridors across Florida, flatwoods to cypress strands to muck, and started his own outfit in 2012. After Hurricane Ian in 2022 he spent six months on debris in Charlotte and Lee counties. He knows the FWC gopher tortoise rule, the eagle nest buffer and the water management district permit thresholds by heart. Brandi runs the office and texts every scheduling window.

FAQ

Land Clearing Questions from DeSoto Property Owners

How much does land clearing cost per acre in DeSoto County?

$1,500 to 2,500 an acre for palmetto and pine mulched in place, $1,200 to 1,800 on ridge scrub, $3,000 to 5,500 to bare dirt with stumps. Expert land clearing on a dead grove is dozer hours plus haul, quoted after a walk.

Do I need a permit to burn cleared brush in Arcadia?

Yes, a daily Florida Forest Service burn authorization, and inside Arcadia you will not get one. On agricultural land outside town a pile can often burn under it. Otherwise the trees and brush stay as mulch and the wood never leaves the parcel.

How long do land clearing projects take?

One day for a half-acre pad, two for 5 acres of palmetto, four for 20 acres of dead grove pushed and raked. Land clearing projects wait longer on the county permit than on our crews.

Can you clear heavily wooded tracts and commercial land?

Yes. The 300-hp mulcher takes pine and oak to about 12 inches; tree clearing above that is the dozer with root rake. On the ROW we ran that pairing up every co-op corridor along the Peace River. Commercial land clearing and site clearing for commercial development or master-planned communities run by the day, $4,000 plus transport.

Who do I call to clear land in DeSoto?

Call (352) 619-3597 or send the form; Brandi texts you a scheduling window within the hour. Our crews have the experience and equipment to handle clearing brush and clearing land safely and efficiently on flatwoods and river bottom. The land clearing service worth paying for is knowing where the water goes; equipment and expertise are the entry fee. When the ground dries out, residential jobs are first on the calendar.
